ASTM E989 is the companion rating standard. It converts the raw impact sound data from E492 into the single-number IIC rating. E989 also defines how the rating is calculated when the test is done in the field rather than the lab. Boards use it to compare one report against another.
ASTM E2179 covers the field measurement of impact sound in a building. It is used when the assembly cannot be tested in a laboratory, which is common in occupied condos. A field test under E2179 often produces a lower number than the lab test, and boards know it.

IIC and STC targets boards set and how assemblies reach them

The finished floor matters more than most owners expect. Hard tile over cork transmits more impact energy than engineered wood over the same cork. A board that approved a wood assembly will not automatically approve tile.
