Foam wins when cost is the binding constraint and the unit sits above a garage, a corridor or a storage room. Mass-loaded vinyl is right when existing doors and thresholds fix the total height.

What none of them solve

No underlayment fixes flanking paths. Sound travels through walls, ductwork and the slab edge, and a board that has heard three complaints will test rather than read.

None of them replace a ceiling assembly in a wood-frame building either. That gap is where most disputes end up.

Common questions

Does cork underlayment alone reach IIC 50? Not by itself in most cases. IIC belongs to the whole assembly, so the slab, underlayment, floor surface and ceiling all contribute.

What is the difference between IIC and FIIC? IIC comes from a laboratory test under ASTM E492. FIIC is the field version under ASTM E2179 and usually reads lower.
