False economies that repeat
Saving on preparation. Skipping leveling, moisture control or proper substrate repair to afford a nicer surface is the most reliable way to fail. The visible material sits on the invisible one.
Cheaping out on the adhesive. The bonding system is a small fraction of the cost and a large fraction of the risk. It is also where emissions frequently hide.
Buying just enough. Ordering without waste allowance or spares saves a little and costs a lot the first time something needs replacing.
Doing hazard work yourself. The saving is real until it is not. Abatement work is regulated for a reason, and the cost of doing it badly falls on the household.
Disposal is where cheap materials lose
Removal cost tracks volume, weight and what the material is. Heavy or mixed-material assemblies cost more to remove than clean, separable ones, and that cost lands at the end of the material's life rather than at purchase, which is exactly why it gets ignored.
Reuse changes the arithmetic. EPA collects success stories in reducing waste, which show where diverting material from disposal produced measurable savings for the organizations involved. The household version is smaller but follows the same logic: material that can be separated, salvaged or donated costs less to get rid of than material that can only be broken up and hauled.

A material that scores well on the first three lines and badly on the last three is the classic budget trap: cheap on the day, expensive across ownership.
Fill this table for every finalist rather than for the one you already prefer. The exercise takes twenty minutes and it regularly reverses a decision, particularly where one candidate can be refinished and the other has to be torn out and replaced when it wears through.
Where reuse actually saves
Reuse saves money when three conditions hold: the material is sound, it is nearby, and the labor to prepare it is priced realistically. Reclaimed flooring that needs denailing, re-milling and grading can cost more in labor than new stock costs outright.
