Humidity is the variable that moves everything

Wood, cork, bamboo, wool and lime all exchange moisture with the air around them. They swell when the air is damp and shrink when it is dry, and the size of that swing, not its average, is what causes damage. A floor that lives between 40 and 50 percent relative humidity all year will outlast the identical floor cycling from 20 percent in February to 70 percent in August.

Relative humidity is a ratio, which is why the same amount of water vapor feels different at different temperatures. The National Weather Service sets out the relationship between temperature, dew point and relative humidity clearly enough to be useful when reading your own hygrometer. The practical consequence indoors: heating cold outdoor air drives relative humidity down hard, which is why winter, not summer, is when gaps open in northern houses.

Notice what these have in common: the fix is rarely a different material family. It is a different format, fixing method or moisture strategy within the same family. Wide plank oak is not wrong in Minnesota. Wide plank oak with no humidification and no acclimation period is.

Smoke season is now a materials question

Across much of the West, and increasingly the Midwest, several weeks a year are spent with the windows shut against wildfire smoke. That changes two things about an interior. First, ventilation stops being available exactly when a freshly finished room needs it most, so scheduling finish work outside smoke season matters. Second, soft porous surfaces hold odor and fine particles, while hard surfaces can be wiped. EPA's guidance on keeping smoke out and cleaning up afterward covers filtration, sealing and what to do once smoke has gotten inside.

If smoke season is a routine part of your year, weight the shortlist toward washable surfaces in the rooms people sleep in, and plan for filtration capacity rather than assuming an open window is always an option.

Test your own house before trusting a map

Regional guidance is a starting hypothesis. Basements, slab-on-grade rooms, additions over crawl spaces and rooms above garages routinely disagree with the rest of the same house by twenty points of relative humidity. Put a hygrometer in each suspect room, log it monthly for a year, and spec against the measured range.

Common questions

What indoor humidity range should I aim for? Most wood and cork manufacturers specify a band in their installation instructions, commonly somewhere between 35 and 55 percent. Follow the sheet that came with your product rather than a generic figure.

Does a humidifier solve winter gapping? It reduces it. Gaps that open and close seasonally are normal. Gaps that never close mean the boards went down at the wrong moisture content.

Is tile always right for humid climates? For wet rooms, usually. For living areas, a sealed and properly ventilated wood floor performs well in the South provided the house has working dehumidification.

How long should material acclimate before installation? Long enough to reach the moisture content of the finished house, which requires a meter reading rather than a fixed number of days.
