Thickness is the whole problem

Insulating a small room is an area calculation. Adding three inches of internal insulation to all four walls of a ten by twelve foot room removes roughly eleven square feet, which is a significant fraction of a small bedroom.

That pushes small-space work toward higher-performance-per-inch materials, toward insulating only the coldest surfaces, and toward fixing air leakage instead of adding bulk. Air sealing costs no floor area at all, which is why it is the first move in a tight room and not the last.

Where to spend the inches

  • The coldest surface first. Usually a ceiling under a roof, or a wall exposed on two sides.
  • Rim joists and floor perimeters. Large heat loss, no floor area lost.
  • Behind radiators on exterior walls. A thin reflective or rigid layer, minimal thickness.
  • Attic hatches and access panels. Frequently uninsulated and easy to fix.
  • Window reveals and shutter boxes. Thin cork or wood fiber board fits where batts cannot.

Rigid boards of cork or wood fiber suit small spaces because they can be trimmed precisely and finished directly. Batt materials need a cavity, which a small room may not have to give.

Tightening a small space is riskier

The smaller the volume, the faster indoor air changes character. A tightened studio apartment with a gas range and no working extraction is a different proposition from the same measures in a large house.

Carbon monoxide is the specific hazard. Before any tightening work, confirm every fuel-burning appliance is correctly vented, and fit alarms that meet the current standard.

Ventilation has to be added back deliberately. EPA's Indoor AirPlus frequently asked questions describe the program's approach to construction that combines a tighter envelope with the moisture control, ventilation and combustion safety measures that have to accompany it. The pairing is the point: tightening on its own is only half the work.

Common questions

Can I insulate a rented apartment? Reversible measures such as sealing gaps, draft-proofing and secondary glazing panels usually yes, with permission. Fixed insulation needs the owner's agreement.

Does internal insulation cause condensation? It can, because the wall behind it becomes colder. Detailing matters, and it is worth professional input on solid walls.

Is thin insulation worth doing? Behind radiators and in reveals, yes. As a substitute for adequate depth on a main wall, no.

Do I still need ventilation in a small tightened room? More than before. Reduced leakage means the deliberate ventilation has to do the work the gaps were doing.
