What is being compared

A shop that cannot produce a current panel spec sheet is selling a story. Most box failures trace back to a supplier swap made after the quote; the homeowners material selection mistakes in that pattern are worth reading before you sign.
Option by option
Wheatboard boxes assemble much like particleboard. Confirmat screws and cam fittings work when the edge is banded first. The cut edge stays the weak point, so an unbanded sink cutout invites trouble. Moisture resistance runs better than standard particleboard because straw takes up water slowly and MDI resin tolerates damp. Straw board also dulls cutting tools faster than plywood, which shows up in a busy shop rather than in a spec sheet.
Plywood boxes take screws in the face and the edge without banding. Birch plywood holds hinges through years of door swing. Marine and exterior grades survive a leak that would ruin any straw panel. A shop that builds thirty boxes a week notices the difference at the hinge, not on the invoice.
Availability splits along supply lines rather than performance. A straw panel mill within a day's truck run keeps a shop supplied. The material advice about interiors written for a coastal market may not describe what a Midwest fabricator can order this week.
Where each one wins
Wheatboard is the right answer for dry upper cabinets, closet boxes and shelving in a conditioned house. It suits a client who asks for a formaldehyde free cabinet material and reads the label. Plywood is the right answer under a sink, beside a dishwasher, in a garage or a laundry, and on any door or drawer face that gets slammed.
European and Canadian panels carry labels such as E1 or E0. Those are not US limits, and the numbers behind them are not comparable. Any imported board sold here still has to meet TSCA Title VI, so a foreign certificate is not a substitute.
Melamine-faced particleboard of either fiber wins where cabinets are cheap, dry and rarely opened. When a wheatboard box fails at year three, the rework and the disposal costs they create outweigh what the sheet saved.
What none of them solve
Neither panel fixes a wet room. Dishwashers, ice makers and leaking traps ruin both cores, though on different schedules. A drain pan and a reachable shutoff valve protect a cabinet box better than fiber choice does.
Emissions come from the whole assembly. Check volatile organic compounds and indoor air quality guidance before claiming a cabinet is clean, because adhesive, banding and finish each contribute something. Neither panel is a structural substitute for a solid wood frame under a heavy counter.
Finishes decide how a box ages under wiping and spray. Pick the finish and the cleaner as a pair, because a harsh spray will dull a water-based lacquer on either core.
Ask for three documents before you approve a cabinet box: the panel spec sheet, the edge banding data sheet and the finish product sheet. Together they answer more than a fiber debate does.
